Hood Container Supports Real-World Engineering Challenge with Ben L. Smith High School Students
Jun, 2026
Hood Container recently had the opportunity to partner this May with juniors from Mrs. Hill’s Engineering course within the Ben L. Smith High School Signature Career Academy of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering on a hands-on industry challenge.
As part of the project, students investigated a wafer seal packaging issue connected to product reliability, customer complaints, and added costs related to returns and repackaging. Working as engineering problem-solvers, the students researched the issue, collaborated in teams, and applied classroom concepts to develop practical solutions.
At the conclusion of the project, the students presented their recommendations to Christopher Jackson, Quality Manager at Hood Container. Their presentations gave them valuable experience in professional communication, problem solving, and applying engineering principles to a real manufacturing environment.
Mr. Jackson praised the students for their creativity, thoughtful approach, and ability to think outside the box. Several of their recommendations will be reviewed further by the Hood Container team as part of the company’s ongoing focus on improving processes, increasing efficiency, and supporting product quality.
Partnerships like this help connect classroom learning with real-world manufacturing challenges. By giving students the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals, Hood Container is proud to support career and technical education while helping prepare the next generation of engineers, manufacturers, and problem-solvers.
